This is a novel about a chemical detective, Mortimer Fern, who works as a pharmaceutical sleuth traveling the world to uncover unique chemistry that may provide medical benefit to humanity. Fern has special abilities that makes him unlike any other chemist and he finds himself wrapped up in the conspiracy that the Boreal Arcana is trying to reveal.
We are introduced to Mr. Fern as he attempts to assist the police in finding the cause of a series of strange deaths plaguing the city of San Francisco. As he works to uncover the mystery, he finds himself in a crisis of memory and he must work out the forgotten truth.
